Subject: the reel to reel tapes

Why are the reel to reel tapes so expensive? I was looking at the players on e-bay and you can buy the player cheaper than the tapes. Do the tapes sound that much better?

There are two main reasons why tape collectors buy Beatles reels: sound quality of the 7.5 ips (Inches Per Second) tapes and their relative scarcity. There were probably 100 to 1000 LP's sold for every reel-to-reel tape, making them much harder to find.

Some tapes are more common than others. Look for "special" tapes like Hard Day's Night (on United Artists) in mono, the second mono issue of Meet the Beatles (5" tape with brown box), the two-tape set of the White Album (with edits that aren't found on any other release), and some of the Apple tapes by non-Beatles artists.

Years ago, very few people collected tapes, but these days tapes have come into their own. People are realizing how hard to come by some of them are, and they're grabbing them up.
