| John Lennon-Two Virgins (Page 1 of 2) | | Willie on 2/11/10 12:22 AM | I wasn't sure where on this forum to post this question, but here it is, I have a copy of John Lennon-Two Virgins on eight track tape great condition are these rare were there many copies of this released on Eight Track tape. Thanks
| | [Posted by namralos on 2/11/10 12:27 AM] Eight tracks are listed in the Price Guide. There were actually several "original" (1969) eight tracks to Two Virgins; some are harder to find than others. There was also a reissue (!) that was thought to be a bootleg but turns out to be legal. It was on the Orbit label and came out in about 1974. It's not in the guide, but the last copy sold for about $50. Frank Daniels
| | [Posted by Willie on 2/11/10 12:35 AM] Thanks Frank, I just checked the guide which I should do more often it's original it is on the Tetragrammation label.
| | [Posted by RadioJP on 2/12/10 6:10 AM] Frank, What is the definition of "Legal" in regards to LP/tape releases? The artist and/or the artist's record company, management company, publishing company receive royalties? Why is this specific Orbit release considered legal?
| | [Posted by Willie on 2/12/10 6:47 AM] While on the subject of legal I had a record posted last year on ebay, they had me pull it off because it was a bootleg it was Paul McCartney-Cold Cuts on White Night Records, but if you look on ebay you see alot of bootlegs a real good example is The Beatles-Kum Back I have a copy of this and know for a fact it's a bootlegal and not a legal release, so how do you define what is legal to sell. It's a gray area of collecting.
| | [Posted by RadioJP on 2/12/10 3:04 PM] Frank, Are you saying that this Orbit 8-track of Two Virgins SHOULD be in the next edition of the price guide? Again, what exactly makes it legitimate?
| | [Posted by namralos on 2/12/10 2:50 PM] If the artist has an authorized record company or companies, records off of those labels are generally bootlegs. This is particularly true if the record claims to contain "unreleased tracks" or concert material. The way eBay deals with boots is crazy. In my opinion, they take no action at all unless someone complains about a specific item. I could spend half my day pointing out counterfeits, pirates, fantasy items, and other bootleg records. Pirate 8 tracks are also common there. Items include... Fantasy (no such item originally): cgi.ebay.com/Beatles-45-Picture-Sleeve-Only-Love-Songs-Girl_W0QQitemZ270530633439QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item3efce1dedf Outtake bootleg: cgi.ebay.com/The-Beatles-LP-Off-White-White-Album-Outtakes-Rare_W0QQitemZ260552529277QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item3caa24157d Counterfeit (posing as a "reissue"): cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-Hottest-Hits-DK-Eskimo-1964-RE-LP-Mint_W0QQitemZ120530123396QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item1c1027ba84 Counterfeits (posing as genuine): cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-She-Loves-You-Ill-Get-You-USA-45-on-SWAN_W0QQitemZ370334513892QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Records?hash=item5639a83ae4 cgi.ebay.com/introducing-THE-BEATLES-ENGLANDS-NO-1-VOCAL-GROUP_W0QQitemZ180468695146QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item2a04c5c06a Bootleg Picture Disc: cgi.ebay.com/Beatles-Casualties-Picture-Disc-Used_W0QQitemZ200438643353QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item2eab12fa99 Fantasy Picture Disc: cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-12-Picture-Disc-REVOLVER-ITALY_W0QQitemZ320485463070QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item4a9e6c141e Pirate (posting as genuine): cgi.ebay.com/Beatles-Let-It-Be-album-LP-AR-34001-Apple-records_W0QQitemZ360232014727QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item53df805387 Pirate (no attestation as to genuine or not): cgi.ebay.com/THE-BEATLES-MAGICAL-MYSTERY-TOUR-8-TRACK-TAPE_W0QQitemZ380197115995QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_Other_Formats?hash=item588583985b Fantasy/Counterfeit (falsely labeled as "reissue"): cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-Yesterday-And-Today-LP-BUTCHER-COVER-GREEN-WAX_W0QQitemZ400102860108QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item5d27fd254c Fantasy (correctly labeled): cgi.ebay.com/Beatles-re-45-empty-picture-cover-Vee-Jay-BEATTLES_W0QQitemZ350311881441QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item5190371ae1 Another fantasy: cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-GIRL-YOURE-GOING-TO-LOSE-THAT-GIRL-MINT_W0QQitemZ370285110846QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item5636b6663e You'll also find fake laserdiscs, VHS tapes, 78's, acetates, and the like. There are pirate cassettes, "sealed" reel-to-reel tapes with no actual contents, etc. If someone had to police them all, it could take forever. Add to these the auctions where an item is merely misrepresented, and you might have a full-time job. The most common example is probably the re-sealed LP, but you'll also see "original" records like this one: cgi.ebay.com/Beatles-VI-mint-sealed-original-stereo-see-label-rare_W0QQitemZ370253489590QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item5634d3e5b6 This doesn't have the stereo message on the back, so it is NOT a first pressing. It is likely a green label copy. However, we often see 1980's reissues being put forth as 1960's originals. Frank Daniels
| | [Posted by Willie on 2/12/10 3:48 PM] Frank the best ones on ebay are the so called sealed albums there was one posted this summer the seller had it listed as a sealed original, right after that he said labels faded with a small scratch at the end of the album, he probally had xray vision.
| | [Posted by RadioJP on 2/12/10 4:42 PM] What makes the specific Orbit 8-track mentioned above "legal"???
| | [Posted by namralos on 2/12/10 6:14 PM] I have owned the Orbit 8-track since about 1985. Always thought it was a boot. However, when I was doing research for the upcoming Beach Boys guide, I discovered that they had an LP on the Orbit label. I bought the LP and did some research on the label. Orbit was owned by Springboard/Scepter, which was a company that released a bunch of cheapo reissues. Those reissues weren't high QUALITY ones, but they were legal. Scepter used to be independently owned and had been the label of quite a few famous artists -- until they were bought by Springboard. I also found a heap of Orbit 8 tracks, including some reissues of Tetragrammaton label material. Of course, we know that Two Virgins was originally owned by Tetragrammaton. Cool story, eh?
