Subject: "The Best Of George Harrison" Orange Capitol Label ST-11578

Why is the Capitol orange label, "The Best Of George Harrison", ST-11578 more desirable to collectors than the custom label issue?

All copies were supposed to be on the custom label. Millions of copies were made -- both BEFORE and AFTER the orange-label pressing. The orange label reissue seems to be transitional -- something that was made when new copies were needed but no labels were available.

Simple answer: the orange label is rare; the custom label is common.

I spent a lot of time pulling copies of "The Best of George Harrison" album out of record bins at used record stores, flea markets and record shows trying to find the scare orange Capitol label version. They have those custom inner sleeves so you can't just peek into the cover and look for an orange label. You have to pull it all the way out and open up the inner sleeve to see the label.

But here's a little trick I discovered after I had finally found a few of them through the years: the copies that I found all had the custom inner sleeve - but with a much thinner paper construction that the original releases (which are very thick). So, once I learned that, I could quickly look inside to see if it had custom inner sleeve and then I'd feel the paper on the sleeve to see if it's thin and flexible or thick cardboard.

Not all of the thin inner sleeve versions had the orange label record inside - but it saved a TON of time in finding more of those orange label variations. They are quite rare, though, as Frank indicated.

Of course, with so few used record stores left, my helpful hint probably isn't too much help anymore. :)
