Subject: 'The Beatles Something New' on the Y/B Parlophone label
Posted by: vsvsmith on 4/28/08 12:38 AM

I have a copy of 'The Beatles Something New' on the Y/B Parlophone label.
It has the missprinted label with the SOLD IN UK script across it also PARLOPHONE CO LTD around the outer rim.
This I believe makes it the V/rare 1st press on Parlophone. The label being changed soon after to exclude the SOLD IN UK and the PARLOHPONE CO LTD.... Yet the spelling of Nicolas is correct supposeibly making this a 2nd pressing. Which pressing is it exactly ?

Thanks

Someone asked about these back on March 16th.
Most of them were made like that. They came out in 1965, which is why the credits are correct.

Of all the copies appearing on popsike that can be identified, exactly half of the black/yellow label copies of Something New have the "Sold in UK" misprint. I do not know how many of the correct copies have the original "Parlophone" print and how many have the "Gramophone" print (1966-1969), but it would seem to me that Gramophone copies are less scarce.

Generally speaking, the first issue (even if it's wrong) is pressed in more quantities than later issues. This is also true on MOST American pressings. The first issue of Beatles Second Album is more common than the corrected issue. The first issue of Sgt. Pepper is more common than the corrected issue.

However, that doesn't mean people WANT the later issues more. I'd rather have a red-label (Capitol) copy of Yesterday and Today from 1971, but almost everyone else would rather have the less rare butcher cover!

On British pressings, people are also interested in the master/stamper ID. If you have copies with masters of "G" on both sides, double the price!
