 Subject: Beatles Cartoons
Posted by: RadioJP on 3/14/08 5:59 AM

Who owns the rights to The Beatles cartoon series? Apple? Are there any plans to release these on DVD as a box set? I was under the impression that when McFarlane issued the cartoon "action figures" a few years back, Apple was gearing up to release the cartoons. I realize the powers that be might think that the cartoons were a bit primitive, but to those of us that grew up with them, they had a lot of charm. Of course the songs were great....and I believe these were ranked #1 in Saturday morning programming in 1965 and 1966. The shows run up through Penny lane and Strawberry Fields. Also, it should be noted that MTV had the rights to air these in the 1980's, I recall.

Yes, Apple was supposed to release the series on DVD in 2005, allegedly coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original premiere of the popular program. They put all projects on the back burner to deal with the Apple/Apple lawsuit and then the preparation of the Beatles catalog for digital download. Then there have been some changes in management. These reasons are also why the Capitol Albums, Vol. 3, has not been released.

I managed to get nearly all of them taped when they were shown on Muchmusic here in Canada in the '80's. You're right, they are primitive. I can't believe I watched them religiously as a kid. Those corny accents are too much!

If they do release the cartoons, any word on if they will clean them up a little or adjust the sound on it?

The cartoons are available on a couple of bootleg releases. There's one from King Features which is a 12 vcd set which has pretty dodgy audio and a better 2 dvd set. I got sick of waiting for official releases a long time ago and my collection is bulging all thanks to bootleg releases.
